L’eixample borned as the expansion of Barcelona after the old town walls were completely destroyed in 1873. L’eixample was a well designed district by the urbanist & architect Ildefons Cerdà in the pursuit of an ordered expansion of the city and the uprasing traffic jumps.
The initial plan couldn’t be completed 100%, but the dream of Ildefons became a reality partially, and the shape of the streets has become one of the icons of the city. The streets create a strict grid pattern that seen from above looks like a wasp nest with octogonal building blocks crossed by hundreds of streets.
Now a days l’eixample is a business, commercial and residential area, and it is one of the best districts to stay in Barcelona.
